Tail Lights Price in Kenya: Matching Side, Shape and Model

Why tail lights get replaced so often
Tail lights take a beating in Nairobi. A reversing knock, a boda boda in traffic or a tight gate is enough to crack one. Lenses also fade in the sun and seals harden, so water gets in and bulbs fail. The driver behind you needs to see your brake lights and indicators, so fix a cracked lamp quickly rather than taping it. This guide shows what tail lights cost in our stock, how to make sure you buy the right one, and what to check before you fit it.
Tail light, rear light, boot light: what you are buying
Kenyans use several names for the same part, so here is how our listings work. - A tail light (also called a rear light, back light or rear combination lamp) is the main lamp on the corner of the body. It usually holds the tail light, brake light, indicator and often the reverse light. - A boot light is the inner lamp mounted on the boot lid or tailgate on cars where the rear lights are split in two. When you open the boot, it moves with the lid. - Bulbs are sold separately. Our guide to bulbs and fog lights covers them: https://partsultan.com/blog/fog-lights-bulbs-price-kenya If the light works but one function is dead, check the bulb and the holder first. A KES 3,000 lamp is no use if the real fault is a corroded bulb holder.
Tail light prices in our stock (October 2026)
We hold 39 tail light and boot light lines. Most are ex-Japan: original lamps removed from vehicles in Japan. Almost all are single units, so the price is per piece and per side. How to choose the right tail light
Four checks prevent nearly every wrong order we see. 1. Left or right, as you sit in the driver's seat. In Kenya the driver sits on the right, so "right-hand side" means the driver's side. Do not judge the side by standing behind the car facing it. 2. Year of manufacture, not registration year. A car made in 2011 and registered here in 2014 needs the 2011 lamp. Your logbook or the plate inside the door frame shows it. Our guide explains where to look: https://partsultan.com/blog/find-right-car-part-chassis-code-oem-number 3. Facelift. Many models changed the rear lamps mid-generation. The Nissan Note E11 and E12 use completely different rear lamps, and our 2012 and 2016 Prado lamps are different units at different prices. Send us a photo of the whole rear of the car. 4. Bulb or LED. Some later lamps use built-in LEDs instead of bulbs, with a different plug. If your old lamp has LEDs, the replacement must match, or the wiring will not fit. On cars with split rear lamps, check whether the broken part is the body-mounted tail light or the boot light on the lid. They are separate parts with separate prices.
Ex-Japan, new or genuine?
For tail lights we stock ex-Japan lamps. They are the original part the car was built with, so the shape and mounting points match exactly. They are used, so we check each one for cracks, broken tabs and moisture before it goes on the shelf. New aftermarket tail lights are cheaper, but fit and lens quality vary. Genuine new lamps from a dealer fit perfectly but cost far more. Our comparison explains the trade-off: https://partsultan.com/blog/ex-japan-vs-new-vs-genuine-car-parts-kenya
Signs your tail light needs replacing
- A crack or hole in the lens, even a small one. Water will follow. - Fogging or droplets inside the lamp after rain or a car wash. - A faded, pinkish lens that looks dull compared with the other side. - A broken mounting tab, so the lamp rattles or sits proud of the body.
Fitting tips
- Most tail lights are held by two to four nuts reached from inside the boot, behind a trim panel or a small cover. Some also have a clip on the outer edge that needs a firm, straight pull. - Move the bulb holders from the old lamp to the new one only if they are in good condition. Clean any green corrosion off the contacts. - Check the rubber seal between the lamp and the body. A missing seal lets water and dust into the boot. - Test every function before tightening: tail, brake, indicator, reverse and the number plate light if it is part of the lamp. - If your bumper also took the knock, see our bumper guide: https://partsultan.com/blog/bumper-price-kenya
