Stabilizer Links in Kenya: Signs of Wear, Part Numbers and Fitting

What a stabilizer link does
The stabilizer bar (also called the sway bar or anti-roll bar) is a steel bar that runs across the car and resists body lean in corners. Stabilizer links are the short rods that connect each end of that bar to the suspension, usually to the strut or the lower arm. Each link has a small ball joint or rubber bush at each end. These joints take a hammering on Kenyan roads: potholes, speed bumps every few hundred metres, and murram corrugations. Once the joints wear, the link starts to knock. It is one of the most common suspension repairs we see, and one of the cheapest.
Signs your stabilizer links are worn
- A knock or clunk from the front or rear when driving slowly over bumps, speed bumps or broken tarmac. - A rattle on rough roads that goes away on smooth ones. - More body lean in corners, or a vague feeling when changing lanes. - A torn rubber boot on the ball joint, often with grease thrown around it. - Play you can feel when you grip the link and shake it with the wheel off the ground. Other parts can make a similar knock: worn shock absorbers or shock mounts, control arm bushings, ball joints or rack ends. A mechanic can find the source in minutes on a lift. How to choose the right link
1. Front or rear. Many cars have stabilizer bars at both ends, and the links are different. 2. Left or right. On some models the left and right links are identical. On others they differ, and the carmaker gives them separate numbers. Left and right are as you sit in the driver's seat. 3. The part number. Toyota front links commonly carry numbers starting 48820- or 48810-. Where the two sides differ, the numbers come as a pair. One of our listings shows this clearly: SL-3890R, number 48820-0K030, for one side, and SL-3890L, number 48810-0K010, for the other. 4. Chassis code and drive. The same model may use different links for 2WD and 4WD versions, or before and after a facelift. Our listing for 48820-0K010, for example, names the Hilux Vigo 2WD and the Revo. Give us your chassis code: https://partsultan.com/blog/find-right-car-part-chassis-code-oem-number 5. Length and ends. If there is no readable number, measure the old link between the centres of the two joints, and note whether each end is a ball joint or a bush.

New, aftermarket or ex-Japan?
Buy stabilizer links new. They are wear parts with ball joints, and a used link from a scrapped car has already used up part of its life. The links on our shelf are new parts. Known aftermarket brands such as Febest, and makers whose codes start CLT or SL, make links to the original numbers. A link from a known brand at a fair price is a sensible buy. Avoid unbranded links with no number at all; the ball joints are where cheap links fail first. Fitting tips
- Soak the old nuts with penetrating oil first, ideally the night before. We stock Greezom WDX-40 penetrating oil, 450 ml, at KES 230. - Many links have a hex or Torx socket in the end of the ball stud. Hold the stud with an Allen or Torx key while you turn the nut, or the whole stud will spin. - If the stud still spins, a mechanic may need to cut the old link off. Do not hammer on the joint; you can damage the strut or arm. - Use the new nuts supplied with the link. Self-locking nuts should not be reused. - On links with rubber bushes, tighten the final nuts with the car standing on its wheels, so the bushes are not twisted at rest. - Many mechanics replace both sides together. If one link has worn out, the other has done the same mileage. - While the wheel is off, look at the shock absorber, the brake pads and the CV boot. Frequently asked questions
What is a stabilizer link price in Kenya? Our stabilizer links are price on request so the figure is always current. Send the number from your old link or your chassis number and we will reply with a price in minutes during shop hours. Is it safe to drive with a broken stabilizer link? A knocking link will not usually stop the car, but the car leans more in corners and handles less predictably. If a link breaks completely, get it fixed before a long or fast journey. Are stabilizer links the same as ball joints? No. The ball joint holds the wheel hub to the lower arm and carries the car's weight. Stabilizer links only connect the anti-roll bar. Both can knock. Do I need a wheel alignment after changing stabilizer links? Usually not, because links do not change the wheel angles. Ask your mechanic if other steering parts were changed at the same time.
