Nairobi to Mombasa by Car: The Pre-Trip Check Before You Leave

Why this road is hard on cars
The drive from Nairobi to Mombasa is close to 500 km on Mombasa Road. For most of that distance you share the road with heavy trucks. You will meet speed bumps and rumble strips, long stretches with few garages and hot weather as you drop towards the coast. A car that is fine for a daily run to town can struggle on a long, hot drive at steady speed. Small problems such as a weak cooling system, a worn belt or a tired tyre show up on a long trip. And a breakdown far from Nairobi, with your family in the car, is much harder to sort out than one in the city. Do this check a few days before you travel, not the morning you leave. That gives you time to buy and fit anything that needs replacing.
1. Is a service due?
If your car is close to its service interval, do the service before the trip, not after. Long drives in heat and dust are close to the "severe" conditions many service schedules describe. Our guides explain the intervals: - When to change your filters: https://partsultan.com/blog/when-to-change-car-filters-kenya - Toyota service schedule for Axio, Fielder and Probox: https://partsultan.com/blog/toyota-service-schedule-axio-fielder-probox
2. Engine oil
Check the oil with the car on level ground and the engine off for a few minutes. - The level should be between the two marks on the dipstick. - Very black, thick or gritty oil is due for a change. - A milky look can mean coolant is mixing with the oil. Do not travel; have it checked. Carry a litre of the correct oil for top-ups. From our stock in October 2026: ORYX 5W-30 engine oil for petrol and diesel engines, 4 litres, KES 3,200 (9 in stock), and a 5-litre diesel engine oil listed as CRB 40CF at KES 1,940 (7 in stock). Use the grade your owner's manual specifies.
3. Cooling system
Overheating is one of the most common causes of breakdowns on long, hot drives. - Check the coolant level in the reservoir with the engine cold. Never open a hot radiator cap. - Look at the hoses for cracks, swelling or wet patches, and squeeze them when cold. They should feel firm, not soft or crunchy. - Look under the car after it has been parked for any green, red or pink drips. - Make sure the radiator fan comes on when the engine is hot. Top up with the same type of coolant that is already in the car. Do not mix different types unless your mechanic confirms they are compatible. We stock 1-litre coolant in red and green.
4. Tyres, including the spare
- Check the pressures when the tyres are cold. Many manuals give a higher figure for a fully loaded car on a long trip. - Look for cuts, bulges and cracks in the sidewall, and uneven wear that may point to an alignment problem. - Check the tread across the full width. - Check the spare tyre's pressure, and that the jack and wheel spanner are in the car and work.
5. Brakes
You will slow down from high speed many times on this road. If the pedal feels soft, the car pulls to one side, or you hear grinding or squealing, have the brakes checked before you go. Our brake pads guide lists the warning signs: https://partsultan.com/blog/brake-pads-price-kenya
6. Lights and wipers
You may drive at dusk or in the rain. Check every bulb with someone outside the car: headlights on low and high beam, indicators, hazards, brake lights and parking lights. Spare bulbs are cheap. In October 2026 we had H4 headlight bulbs at KES 150 and 12V parking bulbs at KES 20. Dust and spray from trucks dirty the windscreen fast. Fill the washer bottle and replace wiper blades that smear: https://partsultan.com/blog/wiper-blades-sizes-kenya
7. Belts and battery
- Look at the drive belt for cracks, shiny glazing or fraying, and listen for a squeal at start-up. - Check the battery terminals for white or green crust and tight clamps. We stock battery terminals at KES 500 (5 in stock, October 2026). - If the car has been slow to start, have the battery tested before you leave.
8. Air and cabin filters
A dusty engine air filter costs power and fuel, and a blocked cabin filter makes the AC weak just when the coast gets hot. Both are cheap and quick to check. Toyota air filters on our shelf start from KES 180 for number 17801-21030 (32 in stock, October 2026). To change the cabin filter yourself, see https://partsultan.com/blog/how-to-replace-cabin-air-filter
What to carry in the boot
- Your driving licence, insurance details and a copy of the logbook - A working jack, wheel spanner and inflated spare - Warning triangles, a torch and a reflective jacket - A litre of engine oil and a litre of coolant - Spare bulbs and fuses for your car - Drinking water for the people in the car - A phone charger and the number of a recovery service
On the road
Watch the temperature gauge. If it climbs above its usual position, pull over safely and switch off the engine, and do not open the radiator until it has cooled. Take a break every two hours or so, and walk around the car at each stop to look at the tyres and for leaks.
