Fuel Filter Price in Kenya: Diesel and Petrol Filters by Number

Why diesel owners care most about fuel filters
A fuel filter stops dirt and water from reaching the injection system. On a modern diesel, with injectors working at very high pressure and very fine tolerances, a small amount of dirt or water can cause expensive damage. A filter costs very little compared with a set of injectors. Fuel can pick up dirt and water anywhere along the way: in storage tanks, from jerrycans, or from condensation in a half-empty tank. That is why diesel pickups, matatus, lorries and fleet vehicles need a good fuel filter changed on time. Many petrol cars are different. Their fuel filter often sits inside the tank with the fuel pump and is changed far less often. Our filter guide explains the intervals: https://partsultan.com/blog/when-to-change-car-filters-kenya. This guide is about buying the right filter.
Types of fuel filter
- Spin-on filters screw onto a filter head, like an oil filter. Common on trucks and many diesels. - Element (cartridge) filters are a paper insert that sits inside a housing you open. - In-line filters sit in the fuel line, common on older petrol vehicles. - Many diesel filters include a water separator, with a drain tap at the bottom and sometimes a sensor that lights a warning on the dash. Your old filter tells you which type you have. Bring it, or photograph it with its number visible.
Match by number and cross reference
Fuel filters are bought by number. Carmaker numbers follow patterns: - Toyota fuel filters often start 23390- or 23303-, for example 23390-0L070 or 23303-64010. - Hino numbers include 23304- and 23401-, for example 23304-EV071. - Isuzu numbers are long and numeric, for example 8-94414796-3. - Mitsubishi Fuso numbers start ME or MX, for example ME036478 or MX910095. Filter brands use their own codes and print the original number they replace. On our shelf, three different filters replace Mitsubishi ME035829: FLO 8109, FLF 8109 and FC-1003. FC-1003 is also listed as interchangeable with ME035393 and FC-319. Two filters replace ME036478: FLF 8110 and SFF-1020. If your mechanic gives you a brand code, we can match it through the original number. Original number or aftermarket?
Most of our fuel filters are aftermarket filters made to the original number, not filters in the carmaker's own box. A filter from a known maker, made to the right number, is a sound choice and costs less. We will always tell you which you are buying. Avoid unbranded filters in copied carmaker packaging. A fake fuel filter can have a poor seal or paper that lets fine dirt through, and you will not know until the injectors suffer. Our counterfeit guide shows the warning signs: https://partsultan.com/blog/how-to-spot-fake-oil-filter-kenya
Signs of a blocked or failing fuel filter
- Hesitation or jerking when you accelerate, especially loaded or on hills. - Hard starting, or an engine that starts then dies. - Loss of power that gets worse as the journey goes on. - On diesels, the water-in-fuel warning light. Drain the separator straight away. - Fuel smell or weeping around the filter, which points to a bad seal. These symptoms can have other causes too, such as a weak pump or injector faults. A filter is the cheapest thing to rule out first.
Fitting tips
- Relieve fuel pressure before opening the system, and keep a tray and rags ready. No smoking or open flames nearby. - Fit the new sealing ring that comes with the filter and wipe a little clean fuel on it. Remove the old ring; two rings on one filter will leak. - Tighten a spin-on filter by hand as the instructions say. Over-tightening damages the seal. - Bleed the air out afterwards. Many diesels have a hand primer pump on the filter head; pump it until it goes firm before you crank the engine. Some engines have a bleed screw as well. - Run the engine and check for leaks before driving. - Write the date and mileage on the filter or in the service book. Fleet owners: change oil, fuel and air filters as a set at each service. Our air filter guide (https://partsultan.com/blog/air-filter-cabin-filter-price-kenya) and the oil filters page (https://partsultan.com/shop/oil-filters) cover the rest of the set.
