Fog Lights and Headlight Bulbs in Kenya: Prices, Fitment and Safe Use

What fog lights are for
Fog lights are low-mounted lamps in the front bumper. They throw a wide, flat beam close to the road, under the fog, instead of lighting it up and bouncing glare back at you. They help in thick mist, heavy rain and dust, when your normal headlights make things worse. They are not extra headlights. In clear conditions a fog lamp adds little light where you need it and can dazzle drivers coming the other way. In Kenya, fog lights earn their keep on misty highland and escarpment roads, on early-morning drives before the mist lifts, and in heavy downpours during the rainy seasons.
When to switch them on, and when to switch them off
- On: in thick fog or mist, very heavy rain or dust, where you can only see a short distance ahead. - Off: as soon as visibility improves. Do not run them as day-time lights or "for style". - Off in traffic and in town at night, where the glare bothers other drivers. - Never as a replacement for working headlights. Rear fog lamps, where fitted, are very bright red lamps meant for thick fog only. Left on in normal conditions they can be mistaken for brake lights by the driver behind. On the legal side, your vehicle's lights must be in working order and must not dazzle other road users. If you are adding or changing fog lamps, especially brighter aftermarket ones, check the current traffic rules and ask at your inspection centre before you fit them. Ask us if you are unsure what a lamp is designed for.
Fog light bulbs: which type does your car take?
Fog lamps use specific bulb types. Look at the old bulb or the owner's manual. Common types include: - H11, H8 and H16, used in many modern fog lamps - 9006 (also called HB4), used for fog or low beam on many cars - H3, used in many older and aftermarket fog lamps Headlights use other types, such as H4 (a two-filament bulb for high and low beam), H11, 9005 (HB3) and 9006 (HB4). The bulb type is printed on the base of the bulb. Take it out and read it, or bring it to our counter.
LED and HID conversions: a word of caution
Many drivers ask about LED or "xenon" upgrades for fog lamps and headlights. A lamp is designed around a bulb whose light comes from a precise point. An LED or HID bulb pushed into a halogen housing often scatters light in the wrong places. You get glare for oncoming drivers and less useful light on the road. If you want brighter lights, the safer route is a lamp unit designed for that bulb type, aimed correctly. Aim matters for fog lamps especially: they must point low.

Fitting checks for a fog lamp
- The bumper must have the fog lamp opening. Many base-model bumpers have a blank cover instead. - Check the mounting tabs in the bumper and on the lamp. - Confirm the side. LHS is left, RHS is right, as seen from the driver's seat. - Factory fog lamps need a switch and wiring. If your car never had them, the wiring may not be there. - After fitting, check the aim against a wall: the beam should be low and flat.
